ARTS IN SOMI

THE WIRTZ GALLERY
Located in the lobby of the First National Bank of South Miami, each month The Wirtz Gallery presents local & international artists.  Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday 9a-4p, and Friday, 9a-6p.  Artist receptions are generally held on the second Friday of the month, from 6-9p and are open to the public.

In August, the works of Christian Duvua will be exhibited.   (Selections shown left and below).  A native of Valparaiso, Chile, he was later raised in New York and now resides in Coral Gables.  His artistic sense in art, writing and music was fostered after suffering a traumatic injury at age seven.  Withdrawn and secluded he found solace in his art.  His paintings reflect a transcendental approach with a kaleidoscope of hues and shapes.

Ariel Celestino Hernandez is the featured artist for the month of September.  Born in Marianao, Cuba in 1974, he is known as “El Pintor De Las Curvas.”  Engaged in his artwork since the age of six, he did his first exposition in Cuba at age 17, and later emigrated to the USA in 1999.  His style is different, colorful, and easily recognizable by its elegant curves with a well-defined personal seal.  His work was selected as the poster art for last year’s ChamberSOUTH South Miami Fine Arts Festival.

OTHER ARTISTIC VENUES
Two retail locations in SOMI that have a unique artistic presence are arango and The Archive.  Both are located on Sunset Drive, however at opposite ends of town.

arango has enjoyed over fifty years in presenting Miamians modern design in housewares, furnishing and accessories.  For decades, arango was a fixture at Dadeland. Last fall, arango went from the mall to main street (5864 Sunset Drive). The store regularly features exhibitions of modern design artists with their collections.
