INTO THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER…

You’ve heard the phrase “the dog days of summer;” well it seems we’ve got a kennel full of those dogs!  With record days of high temperatures, it’s been brutal so far!  We just have to “weather through it” until mid-October, although that start time is gotten pushed back in the past two years.  What to do?!

So kick back, pour yourself a chilled white wine (or as recommended by our newest wine writer, a red too) and pour through the latest issue of SOMI Magazine.  See page 29 for his article and try some other SOMI Summertime Cocktails (pages 30-32).

Summer fun is all around us with events which reflect our family-oriented community.   The Team FootWorks 5K RUN/WALK kicked off the SOMI summer as hundreds upon hundreds descend on our streets to enjoy sport, music, food, friends and family.  And we pause to reflect on John “Hans” Huseby, who with wife Laurie, started the race years ago.  The City of South Miami observed its 90th Anniversary with a series of events starting in mid-June and concluding with the annual fireworks show, where celebrating America’s independence is also another great time for families to come together to enjoy games, picnics, music and fireworks (see page 39 and online.)  And you know you’re in South Florida when divers take to the bay for spiny lobster.   The annual mini-lobster season was held in the last week of July with the annual traditional Spiny Lobster Tournament festivities held at Sunset Tavern.

In this issue’s Business Milestone feature, we acknowledge Giancarlo Designs, an elegant fixture in town.  I’m also pleased to acknowledge Giancarlo for being a charter advertiser in SOMI Magazine since we started thirteen years ago and has continued ever since.

It’s no secret that mom and pop businesses are struggling throughout the United States, we too have seen our share of this problem here in town.  Yet many of the shuttered businesses are finding new life as other entrepreneurs are planning on SOMI as their destination.  See our What’s New in Town feature on pages 40 & 41.   And most importantly, SHOP SMALL IN SOMI all year round.

With the City of South Miami 90th Anniversary, SOMI Magazine continues to chronicle the city’s history with Part II of a VI part series published in this issue (see page 15).

We continue SOMI Magazine’s commitment to provide updates to our readership regarding The Underline, the ambitious project to transform the fallow land under the Metrorail from Dadeland to downtown Miami into an urban park and trail.  The magazine supports this project and the development of the Ludlam Trail, key trails which will ultimately increase the cycling connectivity throughout the county.  See page 38 for this issue’s update.

August 2017 is the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew.  Like many of our readers, I lived through this nightmare, and wish us all well during this hurricane season.

This is the last installment of SOMI Magazine’s twelfth year. I invite you to Be Part of the Conversation and weigh-in with your comments in our Readers Survey online (see details on page 16.)  Your comments are always welcome and much appreciated.

‘Catch up with you as we begin Volume XIII come this October.

Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer, and get ready to greet a change in the weather come mid-October.
