SOMI SUMMER FUN

The summer in SOMI always kicks-off with the annual Team FootWorks Twilight 5K race through the streets. Sponsored by South Miami Hospital, there were 1224 registered for the event, and many, many others gathered for a great evening of food, fun and music. Runners and athletes in all sizes and shapes from Palm Beach to Homestead came together for a balmy summer evening for fitness, friends and family. 57th Court and 73rd Street were closed providing for kids’ activities, area business and tented information booths. The Team FootWorks run benefits local non-profit organizations, including the South Miami Police Explorers. High school and youth football coaches, and other football players, including Miami Dolphins Brandon Alberts, Lamar Miller and Olivier Vernon and Adam Jones of the Bengals joined Cox for the day. Cox introduced Outside the Huddle’s new “50/50” mentoring program which focuses on attitude and character development. As Kennard says: “I’m not just teaching kids how to tackle on the field but how to tackle life.”

Thousands arrived for the annual July 4th bash held at Palmer Park Field. Cars lined 67 Avenue and area residents made their way on foot for an evening of family fun, picnics, a bounce house, face-painting, music, and to be certain, a great fireworks display. Presented by the City of South Miami, the event was sponsored by South Miami Hospital, First National Bank of South Miami, Williamson Automotive Group, South Miami Pharmacy.
