SOMI SUMMER FUN

0

The summer in SOMI always kicks off with the annual Twilight 5K race through the streets.  Sponsored by Team FootWorks and South Miami Hospital, over1,300 people registered for a great evening of food, fun and music.  Runners and athletes in all sizes and shapes from Palm Beach to Homestead came together for a balmy summer evening for fitness, friends and family.

57th Court and 73rd Street were closed providing for kids’ activities, area business and tented information booths.  The run benefits local non-profit organizations, including the South Miami Police Explorers.

A recent entry to what makes a SOMI summer so special was the NO EXCUSES camp hosted by the Outside the Huddle Foundation, a project of former South Miami resident, NFL cornerback Kennard Cox.  Some 350 kids took to the Palmer Park field on Saturday, June 8 for a day of mentoring, fun and food.   Many local businesses help sponsor this great day for kids.   Other football players, including UM “rookies” joined Kennard Cox on the field to help mentor the kids with the focus on studies and sports.  As Kennard says: “I’m not just teaching kids how to tackle on the field but how to tackle life.

Thousands arrived for the annual July 4th bash held at Palmer Park Field.   Cars lined 67 Avenue and area residents made their way on foot for an evening of family fun, picnics, a bounce house, face-painting,  music, and to be certain, a great fireworks display.  Presented by the City of South Miami, the event was sponsored by South Miami Hospital, First National Bank of South Miami, Fellowship Church and Williamson Automotive Group.
