SPAIN IN SOMI

SOMI has just become SO SPANISH as Barceloneta Mercat/Bistro has opened in late December just off Sunset Drive at 58 Court (former location of Poblano and Origin).  For those who have travelled throughout Spain, the concept will be very familiar – good people coming together to enjoy good food and drink.  With red brick, woods and accent lighting, the space has been transformed into a cozy, familial bistro which transports the guest to another gastronomic culture with the traditional Catalan tradition of “Mercat” dining.

The concept was developed by Manual Suarez-Inclan, who comes from Madrid, Daniela Rezai and Executive Chef Juliana Gonzalez.  Daniela and Manual both studied hospitality and culinary arts at the acclaimed Les Roches school in southern Spain.  They first opened in South Beach in December 2011, and within the year sought out another location.  “South Miami is very much about family and neighborhood, and our concept was a perfect fit,” says Daniela.  “Many of our customers in South Beach come from this area, so it’s like greeting old friends, and making new ones.”

Daniela reports that one of her dad’s favorite Spanish proverbs is “The belly rules the mind.”  Guests at Barceloneta will find a superb  menu, one in which Chef Juliana has married the traditional with the innovative.  Chef Gallo notes that the Bistro Lamb Shank and Rabo de Toro are among the favorities served up; and they also make their own hand-made choriso.

The “Old World” wine list is an impressive collection of select wines from Spain and France, and for a cocktail in the afternoon or evening, their mixologist has created drinks inspired by many bars in Spain.

Playful energy and joy permeate the premises, which comes from the passion that the owners bring to the table.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-12. |  5850-B Sunset Drive | 305.665.0020
