With summer’s arrival, we take to the streets to find out what’s hotter than the weather in this season’s fashion forecast. From bold, colorful tartan plaids and classic patchwork pantsuits, to mini-bags and bucket hats, summer 2019 takes us back to the closet of Beverly Hills’ most CLUELESS shopper in what is sure to be a Cher Horowitz-inspired season.
Tartan plaids appeared yet again on the streets of New York, London, Paris and Milan, and of course, in true fashion week style, the traditional print wasn’t one to be worn subtly by fashionistas. Some of our favorite looks were seen at Balenciaga and Marni, which showcased the classic print in bold, eye-catching hues and mix-matched for your entertainment. Tibi offered up a more traditional pairing in bright pastels, while Fendi and Missoni went for a muted palette with attention given to cut and fit.
Patchwork is no longer just a crafty textile that your grandma enjoys putting together. It’s also one of fashion’s latest trends. Spotted on the streets outside fashion shows at all the major capitals, patchwork appeared on dresses, jumpsuits, pants and more. As colorful as it is creative, the look sews together contrasting pieces of fabric to achieve an eclectic and eye-catching design. Keeping to true traditional American, Polo by Ralph Lauren always showcases its most unique patchwork prints along with Aussie inspired Zimmerman, which brought a hippie chic vibe to its designs using mixed swatches of fabric in patchwork form. ETRO played off the trend in a beautiful array of silks and chiffons, and of course Jeremy Scott gave us full-on denim patchwork realness.
Every show season offers up a must-have handbag, and this summer is certainly no exception. However, unlike previous seasons, the latest “It” bag isn’t defined by its shape. Instead, size is what sets it apart from the rest. This time, the accessory has been shrunk down to fit no more than a phone and possibly lipstick, noted in current collections by the French boy wonder Jacquemus, who revolutionized the mini-bag a couple of seasons back. So, if you value style over function, be sure to invest in a miniature version of your favorite handbag whether it be from Dior, Jil Sander or Hermes.
Bucket hats are back! Yes, the truly iconic ’90s accessory is another must-have item and should undoubtedly be on your shopping list — if you don’t already own one or haven’t dug up any from that dusty box in your parent’s attic. Providing both sun protection and style, these casual and cool hats are perfect for weekend ensembles. Whether plain, patterned or sporting a featured logo, the floppy brimmed hats add an on-trend edge to any outfit. Some of the most chic variations were seen at Valentino adorned in feathers and beads. We also can’t deny our lust over the ones we saw at Versace and Chanel…. I mean come on, who wouldn’t sport one?!
Summer is sure to turn out the 90s in any way possible. Whether it be in fashion or temperature, this season we dial up the style eye and play with pattern, print, and accessories the only way we know how. Always keep true to your stylish ways, but it never hurts to play around with trends, especially when they’re as much fun as what we’re seeing on the runways now.
