Friends of The Underline kicked off the new year with an all day board of directors retreat Saturday, January 26th at our offices at Building.co near Brickell. Led by friend and facilitator Bud Park, our board members were led through a visioning exercise for The Underline, discussing the project’s mission, vision, goals and our team’s core values. With lively discussions about our shared passion for public green spaces, community connectivity and equity and positive impacts on public health and wellness, we emerged enthusiastic about 2019 and beyond.
So what are we working on this year?
1. The Underline’s Brickell Backyard opens in June 2020. While this seems like a long time away, it’s actually just around the corner! So, we are planning our opening celebration for Brickell Backyard. From health and wellness to cultural and educational activations, look forward to a robust line up of community-based events on The Underline.
2. Curator Ximena Caminos has created a bold art master plan to engage and connect the community with public art and each other. Last year, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded a matching grant of $500,000 to The Underline for art. We would like to raise the matching funds privately this year.
3. We are also collaborating with Miami-Dade County to ensure that design and construction for Phase II and V are on time and delivered to the project vision.
4. Continue improving our health and wellness and community events pre-construction. This year we are introducing DocWalks, where we walk and talk about ways to be healthy. Look for more info our first walk coming April 13th leaving from South Miami Hospital.

A community bike ride to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival on Feb. 17th at 10 AM! The Underline Cycling Club powered by Baptist Health South Florida will pedal with partner Bike Coconut Grove to the festival and back.
Free monthly yoga classes powered by Baptist Health South Florida beginning Saturday February 23rd at 10 AM at Brickell City Centre.
