WHAT’S NEW IN TOWN
Walk about our hometown shopping and dining district with SOMI publisher.
On this walk about our hometown, I started out on what I refer to as “Sunset East”, the area comprised of the City of Coral Gables (north side) and Miami-Dade County (south side). And for a first, I began with lunch at Daniel’s Miami, a premiere steakhouse located at the former Fiola’s Ristorante.

For lunch, I enjoyed the Strawberry Gazpacho soup and a succulant steak.

I was joined by SOMI’s lifestyle writer, Peter Laird, for a “Miami Spice” lunch. Peter’s article on Daniel’s is published in this SOMIonline Fall edition, however it suffices to say the lunch was exceptional and the European tradition of table service was much appreciated, a true fine-dining experience. 1550 San Ignacia Avenue, CG | 305.912.2639

Heading toward Red Road, I stopped at MIRO’S boutique, Vicki Miro’s new location in town after moving from the Red Road location of several years. With a new look and parking accessibility, the new location is attracting new customers to her exceptional boutique.

Still on the east side of Red Road, I visited with the folks at Country French, a retail staple in the area for forty-four years. The papered wall mural covers over the gaping hole in the front entrance from a car mishap in April. The driver went forward rather than in reverse and took out the entrance and several pieces of furniture. We look forward to a renovation in time for their traditional exquisite holiday décor. 7259 Red Road | 305.661.0159

Crossing over the “scramble intersection” at Red & Sunset to what I refer to as “Sunset Centro,” I happened upon workers putting up a sign announcing a new eatery coming into the former Spris location. Honey Veil café & bakery is a concept created by sisters bringing the love of sourdough bread to Miami. They started as a home kitchen hobby, had a mobile business, and are now opening their first “brick and mortar” location to SOMI. We can’t wait! Get ready for a grand opening announcement coming soon, and read more about them in a What’s Cookin’ feature in an upcoming issue of SOMIonline,

Turning the corner on to 57th Court, a wallpaper company WCO is opening in the former space of Mess of Blues. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have as I’m redoing my living room in the coming months. 7209 SW 57th Court
Further down 57th Court, I met up with Kristina Yacuba, owner of BOHO Nail Spa in the former location of SOMI Nail Spa. Kristine, who is from Moscow and was in the beauty salon business for six years there, in May acquired the space and made many changes to its appearance and service level. Kristina refers to her “bohemian” wholistic approach providing client options and beauty services. As one customer noted, “the interior is more neutral and tranquil creating a soft environment.” Open 7 days. 7301 SW 57 Court | 786.322.8383

Walking back on to Sunset Drive and heading down to another new concept opening, FLIGHT WEST on the corner of Dorn Avenue (SW 59 Avenue), FLIGHT WEST is a premier dining concept popular in Rochester (NY), offering exceptional cuisine alongside a curated selection of wine, bourbon, cocktails, & beer, all served by attentive staff in a welcoming atmosphere. We can’t wait for the Grand Opening, the date is not finalized at time of publication.

This issue’s walk about town finishes up on “Sunset West” the area west of US1. It’s here we come into the HANNA & TIGER ASIAN MART, located on the ground level at the VOX Miami student housing towers. The market offers viral Asian ice creams and a plethora of Japanese and Chinese snacks. This popular market with the college population has venues near FIU and Miami-Dade College.

Publisher’s Note: What’s New in Town is a complimentary seasonal feature highlighting some of the businesses making their entry into SOMI market. We appreciate their investment in our hometown community. Thank you. – jes
