On this walk about our hometown district, two new business establishments were visited, sitting down to meet the respective owners, while noting new eateries soon to be opening around town. Read about these spots in our “SOMI SoNu EATS” article.

The first stop was at Sweet Ogre Jewelry, meeting the creative designer and owner Derick Cancio. He graduated from the Fine Arts Academy in Trinidad, Cuba, which is a vibrant hub for fine arts, offering a diverse range of artistic expression and experience. A lover of art and refined taste, he is passionate about unique, high-quality jewelry. The jewelry’s concept is to create original collections and customized pieces crafted in gold and precious stones. 

Cancio founded Sweet Ogre in downtown Miami in 2021, located in the Seybold Building where he provided design and manufacturing services to other companies in the industry. In April 2025, he opened his first retail establishment in South Miami. South Miami appealed to him for its unique character and inviting atmosphere.

Derick designs exclusive jewelry for clients seeking exceptional quality, timeless style, and a distinctive touch in every creation. At the store he is joined by his wife Garciella and 14-month-old Mia.

My next stop was at AMMA, a new luxury medical spa located in suite 302 at 5901 SW 74 Street. It’s here I met up with Patricia Lahera and Marcia Leon, cousins who developed the concept in January 2025 and spent nine months establishing the brand and building out their elegant space. AMMA in Sanskrit means self-care and love.
