Millions of people in the United States and Canada are currently being treated by members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). One in five patients is an adult.

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth in the same way for a 75-year old as it does for a 13-year old. Dr. Jorge C. Coro and Dr. Ivette M. Coro remind those considering orthodontic treatment that healthy teeth can be moved at any age!

“Adults need not shy away from treatment because of their age,” says Dr. Jorge C. Coro. “If an adult is self-conscious about their smile or teeth have shifted after having braces as a child, orthodontic treatment can provide them with the same benefits younger patients enjoy. Less visible orthodontic materials have made adult orthodontic treatment increasingly popular in recent years. Some malocclusions/bad bites may even get worse if left untreated.” According to a survey by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), adult patients grew by 14% from 2010 to 2012.

If treatment is recommended, there are a number of options available today that make it less noticeable than it was in the past. “Thanks to today’s technology, the materials we orthodontists use to move teeth can be almost imperceptible,” notes Dr. Ivette M. Coro. As specialists, orthodontists are able to use a full array of “appliances” to create a healthy and beautiful smile. These include traditional metal braces with small, sleek brackets and thin wires; ceramic or tooth-colored braces; and clear aligners such as Invisalign. Also owning to improved technology, the average time between orthodontic appointments is about six weeks, so adults miss less time from work and other important commitments.

Teeth are constantly moving throughout our lifetime and tend to crowd as we age. It is never too late to restore that beautiful, youthful smile!

“A smile is the boldest statement you can make without saying a word.”
