Providing services to three generations of fortunate clientele, Myra and Company Spa is celebrating its 40th year as part of the South Miami business community. “It’s been very fulfilling,” said Myra Porter, founder and now partner with her daughter, Erica.

Myra is pleased that her spa, a veritable SOMI staple, offers a family atmosphere with longtime employees who really take the time to get to know each customer. She is proudest that at Myra and Company quality is paramount; they offer the community an established, well-trained staff, and distinctive products for hair, nail and skin care, which includes their own private label lines.

Myra credits her daughter Erica, who joined her mother years ago after obtaining a baccalaureate degree in hotel and restaurant management, with diversifying the business model by offering a variety of weekly specials through her very own Myra and Company Color Experience.

""Over the years, Myra has pursued other interests, including obtaining a law degree at the University of Miami in 1994, and currently as an artist. For both pursuits, Myra drew inspiration from life events such as in the former, a high school reunion wherein she realized while all her peers had gone to college, she had devoted herself full time to developing a business. For the latter, she spent considerable time in the Nashville countryside on her farm, where she discovered her love of color in painting landscapes and abstracts.

To think that 40 years ago Myra brought her toddler, Erica, to a shop which back then was all of 800 feet, to now where a vibrant spa continues to thrive. Myra remains delighted with her daughter, one of four children—Myra also has two grandchildren—and the only one who decided to continue in the family business. “The clients love her. Many new guests don’t even know there is a Myra,” she said.

""As the first-ever spa in the city of South Miami, Myra and Company has expanded to a facility of 5,200 square feet. Always on the avant-garde in offering innovative services, Myra and Company was the first establishment in South Miami to offer Pilates classes. Myra had been intrigued with this form of exercise, took a class, learned that is was not only an effective form of exercise, but also a very safe one, and decided to introduce it to the community. For 19 years, the Pilates courses have given participants a rigorous and healthful workout experience.

""Today, Myra helps her daughter run the spa and enjoys painting abstracts, impressionist portraits as well as landscapes using oil-based or acrylic paints. Myra recently celebrated another milestone — her sixtieth birthday — in the land where she enjoys dual citizenship, Ireland.
