In this issue we’ve zeroing in on some of the fun and excitement of the summer. The inside cover spread captures three events that reflect our family-oriented community. The Team FootWorks 5K RUN/WALK on the first Sunday in June kicks off the SOMI summer as hundreds upon hundreds descend on our streets to enjoy sport, music, food, friends and family. Celebrating America’s independence is also another great time for families to come together to enjoy games, picnics, music and a great fireworks show. To the annual list of fun summer things to do around the area, the South Miami based OUTSIDE THE HUDDLE FOUNDATION presented its fourth No Excuses Camp. The camp brings kids of all ages and from many local communities for a day of sport and mentoring by coaches and NFL players.

And how about the world of sports and the emotional roller coaster ride for the past couple of months. To be certain, we were all disappointed (to say the least!) with the HEAT’s demoralizing and devastating losses to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Championship. But quickly the euphoria of the World Cup 2014 exhilarated the masses. And then, LeBron James decides to go back to Cleveland and the HEAT has to re-group and reinvent themselves. What a ride it was!

As to the soccer, I’ve come a long way in my appreciation of the sport, a/k/a fútbol, since my days growing up in NYC playing stick ball in the streets with a broom handle and a pink Spaulding rubberball. Coming up it was baseball, basketball (I grew up with the Larrangas in Parkchester), football and swimming. Kicking a ball up and down the streeet or on a field wasn’t even on the radar. Today, trying to figure out where soccer fits into the fabric of America is a popular topic. However, for one afternoon at least, there was this unexpected truth: from the East to the West, sports fans of every kind were inspired by the performance of a soccer goalkeeper and soccer became a real winner in the USA. In this issue we’ve set aside an expanded “in & around” to cover the FIFA games.

73rd Street in town is showing off some new businesses. On west side toward US1, My Ceviche has now opened and joins other recently opened retail stores: The Soul Shop, TriProLab and Odyssey Boutique. On the east side near Red Road, Cream apothecary boutique has moved off Sunset to a great spot across from Town Kitchen/Bar. You can read about these openings in our What’s New feature, on page 42.

As we go to press along with My Ceviche, new restaurants are opening: Station No. 5, Centolire, with Temple, Rice House of Kabob to follow very shortly. And for a real Italian dessert visit the cannoli cart at the entrance to Sunset Place. You’ll be reading about these new dining spots in our October/November issue, and if you happen to dine there beforehand, drop me a note and send your comments….

This is the last installment of SOMI Magazine Volume IX; we begin our tenth year this fall with our October/November issue. And come October, we’ll have a new mast head to reveal and some other new things to report, with revisions to our companion website, and more.

WE’D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. Please take time to complete our Readers Survey (page 39) or complete it online. On the inside back cover, we’ve posted images of the six covers of this Volume IX. Many readers often comment about how exceptional our covers are – thank you! Please let us know which your favorite is. Log on at somimag.loc and weigh in with your choice. And while you’re there, how about giving us thumbs up ILIKESOMIMAG on Facebook. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer, and get ready to greet a change in the weather come mid-October.
