As summer begins….

As we go to press, all the best to those running and walking in the annual 5K Twilight Run. This year, all the more special, as it is in memory of John “Papa Hans” Huseby, of TEAM FOOTWORKS, who passed away suddenly this past November.

Along with the Spin y Lobster Tournament held at Sunset Tavern, you know it’s the official start of summer here in SOMI.

The summer months are fine diving months here in South Florida. Our cover feature explores the reefs and wrecks you’ll find in the BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK and in the JOHN PENNECAMP STATE PARK. As SOMI Magazine is committed to bring our readership information about our cultural resources above ground, I thought it was a good time to look underwater

as well.

It’s becoming more usual to report on multiple restaurant openings in our What’s New feature, and that’s a good sign. In the recent months, we’ve had two new restaurants open, and after a year of having a “Coming Soon” sign on their US1 windows, Rice, House of Kabob, is now officially open! Interior work is being done in the vacated restaurants which were once Trattoria Sole and Casa Larios. I’m certain that in our next issue, I can introduce you to two new SOMI restaurants. Several new boutiques and showrooms have recently opened in town; you can also read more about them in the News segment of the magazine.

And what’s new also is that The Shops at Sunset Place is now sold. Plans are being discussed for vast improvements to The Shops. Stay tuned for an announcement coming later this summer as the plans are revealed.

In this issue of SOMI Magazine, we conclude our series on the historically significant buildings within our South Miami Town Center, with the Dorn Brothers Buildings, the iconic entrance to our retail and restaurant district. Prior issues are archived online at www.somimag.loc. I hope you get to appreciate the charm and uniqueness of our shopping and dining district.

As SOMI Magazine is committed providing updates to our readership regarding The Underline, an ambitious project to transform the fallow land under the Metrorail from Dadeland to downtown Miami into an urban park and trail, we are providing a periodic update (see page 33). The proposed plan is suggested to provide all kinds of amenities for joggers, cyclists, and those who want to enjoy some new landscaped spaces. We covered The Underline in our last issue; of the magazine, and in this issue, we note public meetings and activities over the last several months. SOMI Magazine is committed to this project and to the development of the Ludlam Trail, key trails which

will ultimately increase the cycling connectivity throughout the county.

I invite you to “Be Part of the Conversation” and weigh-in with your comments in our Readers Survey which is online. Your comments are always welcome, especially as we look forward to our eleventh year in publishing the magazine come this October/November.

Enjoy your summer, and wherever your travels take you, be safe…See you at the July 4th celebrations!
