INTO THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER…

heard the phrase “the dog days of summer;” well it seems we’ve got a kennel full of those dogs!  With record days of high temperatures, it’s been brutal so far!  We just have to “weather through it” until mid-October, although that start time is gotten pushed back in the past three years.  What to do?!

So kick back, pour yourself a chilled white wine or summertime cocktail and pour through the latest issue of SOMI Magazine.

We continue our exclusive cover features of area community resources and places of interest with a visit to the Montgomery Botanical Garden located on Old Cutler Drive.  Unlike Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, the Montgomery center is exclusively a research institution.  Yet however, visitors are welcome; an appointment is necessary. If you are into palms and cycads this is one of the premier centers in the world and well worth a visit.

Soccer fever gripped the world for one month with 3.4 billion watching The World Cup 2018 from Russia.  And with the French win in The World Cup, SOMI Magazine took to the street to visit with our French owned businesses to congratulate them (see page 34).  Local fever also intensified as famed British super star celeb David Beckham, visited the community to discuss his proposed Miami franchise (see page 20).

The Underline is the ambitious project to transform the ten miles of fallow land under the Metrorail from Dadeland to downtown Miami into an urban park and trail.  SOMI Magazine is the sole media sponsor of this endeavor, and provides regular updates from Meg Daly, President of the Friends of the Underline.  Pedestrian and bicycle safely are paramount in the planning out of this project as it intersects US1 crossings throughout.  To better inform our readership about this project, we’ve dedicated two pages to present an FDOT report and plans in development, starting on page 38.

In this issue’s Business Milestone feature, we visit with Deli Lane’s dynamic duo of Jahn and Mike.  Deli Lane has been serving great eats to the community for thirty years.  Congratulations!

It’s no secret that mom and pop businesses are struggling throughout the United States, we too have seen our share of this problem here in town.  Yet many of the shuttered businesses are finding new life as other entrepreneurs are planning on SOMI as their destination.  See our What’s New in Town feature on pages 40 & 41. And most importantly, SHOP SMALL IN SOMI all year round.

This is the last installment of SOMI Magazine’s thirteenth year. I invite you to ‘Be Part of the Conversation” and weigh-in with your comments in our Readers Survey.  A printed survey is on page 21 and it can also be completed online. Your comments are always welcome and much appreciated.

‘Catch up with you as we begin Volume XIV come this October.

Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer, and get ready to greet a change in the weather come mid-October.
